Rice mills, cold stores and the harvest peak

A rice sheller in Sangrur or a potato cold store near Jalandhar may run close to full load for a few months and then sit lightly loaded. That pattern shapes the best transformer choice.

Size for the peak, not the average

Add up the motors, dryers and compressors that run together at harvest, allow for starting current, and leave some margin for expansion. Under-sizing for the peak shortens transformer life.

Weigh the losses

Off-season, the unit is still energised. No-load loss is paid all year; load loss mostly at harvest. A higher IS 1180 EEL grade or an amorphous core trims the year-round part.

Protect the investment

Harvest is the worst time for a failure. An AMC with Jaybee includes a standby transformer within 24 hours of a reported fault.

• Connected load and the largest motor
• Supply voltage and feeder
• Months of peak running
• Preferred EEL grade
